At the foot of Montjuïc Hill, in front of the National Palace, stands one of Barcelona’s most captivating attractions: the Magic Fountain.
In fact, it is a single fountain composed of countless smaller jets. It is called “magical” for a reason — water, music, and light alone create a grand and colorful spectacle that inevitably enchants everyone who watches it.
The Magic Fountain was built in 1929 for the International Exhibition by engineer Carles Buïgas. The musical accompaniment was added later, in 1992, during the Barcelona Olympic Games. It was the first fountain in the world to combine all these effects, using remarkably advanced technology for its time.
The fountain covers an area of more than 3,000 square meters, and its water jets reach heights of up to 50 meters. Every second, 2,600 liters of water are propelled by five pumps, while 3,620 jets rise into the air, constantly changing shape and color in harmony with classical and contemporary music.
Today, thanks to modern computer technology, the fountain has truly come to life. The water moves perfectly in rhythm with the music, responding to every transition in the melody and transforming into thousands of colors and hundreds of shapes. It remains one of Barcelona’s most visited attractions, continuing to amaze both visitors and locals alike.

Poble Espanyol is a truly remarkable architectural complex, built in 1927 for the 1929 International Exhibition. Often referred to as the “City of Artisans,” it brings together around 116 buildings — houses, palaces, temples, and churches — representing medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque architectural styles from different regions of Spain.
Many of the buildings are constructed at full scale, while others are faithful replicas. Yet this does not diminish its main purpose: to introduce visitors to the architectural treasures of the country.
