Excursion to Montserrat Mountain

A trip to Montserrat Mountain is a fascinating journey and one of the most iconic destinations in Catalonia.

Excursion to Montserrat

Duration: 5–6 hours
Format: round-trip transfer from Barcelona with a professional guide, by private vehicle

An experienced guide will help you avoid queues, enjoy the famous boys’ choir accompanied by organ music, and purchase organic cheeses produced on local farms.

Optionally, you may take the funicular railway and visit the art museum.

The mountain massif is located about 50 kilometers from Barcelona.
It is formed by gigantic rock formations of whimsical shapes, with evocative names such as Bernardo’s Horse, The Mummy, The Elephant’s Trunk, The Bishop’s Belly, and many others.

The main attraction is the active Benedictine monastery (Monastery of Montserrat), an important religious and pilgrimage center for Catholics from all over the world.

In the 11th century, Abbot Oliba of Ripoll founded the monastery at an altitude of 725 meters above sea level. Over the centuries, it has been repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, gradually changing its architectural appearance. During the Napoleonic campaign in Spain, the monastery was almost completely destroyed. Its restoration took more than a hundred years, and only in the 20th century did it acquire its present form.

Today, Montserrat stands as a true symbol and pride of Catalonia.

Every year, millions of visitors and pilgrims come here to see the monastery’s main relic: the Virgin of Montserrat, also known as La Moreneta or the Black Madonna.

She holds the Child Jesus and a sphere symbolizing the universe. A thousand years after her appearance, in 1881, Pope Leo XIII proclaimed her the patron saint of Catalonia due to numerous testimonies of miracles. According to legend, if you kiss her hand and make a wish, it will come true.

The monastery is also famous for its boys’ choir of 50 singers.
Every day (except Saturdays at 1:00 pm), they perform a hymn of praise to the Virgin Mary. Thousands of people gather to hear their angelic voices.

In 1911, a museum was opened within the monastery complex, now home to more than 1,300 works.
It features six permanent exhibitions, including archaeological artifacts from Eastern cultures, sculptures, icons, engravings dedicated to the Virgin Mary, jewelry from the 15th to 20th centuries, and an art gallery.

The gallery displays masterpieces by El Greco, Caravaggio, Morales, Degas, Picasso, and Dalí, as well as an outstanding collection of Slavic and Byzantine icons.
