Cuba fishing
Fishing in Cuba is simply unique. The numerous currents of the Caribbean Sea, washing Cuba from all sides, bring here such valuable fish species as blue marlin and sailfish. The geological platform on which the island lies abounds in coral reefs that provide shelter to countless varieties of fish. The deeper the platform goes into the ocean, the larger the representatives of the fauna that inhabit there. At great depths, one can encounter sailfish and snapper. The quantity of shrimp, lobsters, crabs, and other representatives of the colorful underwater world is mind-blowing.
Fishing in Cuba — fish species
White marlin (Tetrapturus Albidus). White marlin can reach 3 meters in length (usually the fish size does not exceed 2 meters) and weigh over 40 kg. Fishermen prefer to use small tunas as bait. The most favorable time for catching white marlin is between 10:00 and 15:00.
White marlin fishing season and migration places:
From April to May in the southwestern part of the island, and by the end of this period, white marlin can be found in the northeastern part of Cuba.
White marlin is also found in the southeastern part of the country in April, when it migrates westward.
Blue marlin (Makaira Nigricans). Blue marlin can reach 4 meters in length and weigh up to 450 kg. Blue marlin has the habit of feeding throughout the day, staying near the water surface.
The best time for catching is between 05:00 and 11:00. It takes artificial lures well, however most fishermen prefer to use sardines or other small fish.
Fishing seasons:
From July to September in the northwestern part of Cuban seas.
From March to June off the southeastern coast of Cuba, and from April to June — off the southwestern coast.
Sailfish (Istioph Platypterus). Although once a sailfish of 3 meters in length was caught, usually its size does not exceed 1.5 meters with an average weight of 20 kg. However, specimens up to 35 kg are often encountered. This fish prefers natural bait over artificial. Sardines are usually used as bait. The most favorable time for catching is between 09:00 and 14:00.
Fishing seasons:
From October to November northwest of the island.
From March to June off the southeastern coast, and from April to June — at the southwestern tip of Cuba.
Swordfish (Xiphias Gladius). This species can reach 4.5 meters in length and weigh more than 450 kg. Most commonly encountered are specimens about 2.5 meters long and weighing 125 kg.
Calamari are usually used as bait, but shiny artificial lures can also be used when fishing.
Fishing seasons:
Like most other species, swordfish migrates in coastal waters during certain periods of the year, so the best time for catching is from February to March in the northwest of the island.
The most favorable season for catching these species is the spring-summer period. During this time of year, the weather is always good. For example, flying marlin is well caught off the northeastern coast of Cuba from October to November, when the probability of cold atmospheric fronts is low.
Other fish species caught by trolling — tunas.
Among these fish are big tunas, small tunas, and Wahoo.
The most interesting are:
Yellowfin (Thunnus albacares) Size — 1.7-2 meters. Weight — 200 kg.
Magro Bluefin (Thunnus thynnus) Size — over 3 meters. Weight — 600 kg.
Bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) Size — 2 meters. Weight — 250 kg.
Among medium species are: Albacore (Thunnus alalunga), Blackfin (Thunnus atlanticus).
Small tuna species include: Skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis) Size — 1 meter. Weight — 12 kg. Sierra (Scomberomorus cavalla) Size — 1.5 meters. Weight — 15 kg. Wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri) Size — 2 meters. Weight — 40 kg.
Big tunas migrate from July to October in the Havana area. Small tunas migrate at different times of the year. For example, Wahoo is found in Cuban waters from September to February.
In addition to these species, your trophies can include at least 15 other fish species, among them: bonefish, permit, snook, barracuda, lemon shark, groupers, snappers, and tarpon.
