The Zapata Peninsula
On the southern coast of Matanzas province, not far from its namesake capital, lies the beautiful Zapata Peninsula (Spanish: Zapata). The name of the peninsula is not particularly intricate: outwardly, it resembles a little shoe, and in Spanish the word «zapata» translates as «shoe». The Zapata Peninsula is the largest and at the same time the best-preserved biosphere reserve in the Caribbean islands. In the reserve, among exotic plants (sedges, mangrove trees, marabou shrubs, and lagoons), one can often encounter various wildlife: flamingos, crocodiles, and a rare species of Cuban parrots. Altogether, the reserve hosts more than 900 plant species, 171 bird species, 31 reptile species, and 12 mammal species.
For lovers of extreme recreation and equally extreme food, we recommend visiting Boca de Guamá. Here you will find a crocodile farm that was opened in 1962. The farm houses crocodiles of different species and ages. Also, if you wish, you can try crocodile meat here.
A vacation on the Zapata Peninsula would not be complete without visiting its tourist center, Guamá. The center is located in the middle of Treasure Lagoon, so you can combine these two pleasures without wasting time. Forty-nine cottages, a disco, and a restaurant are built on stilts inside the lake, making this place fantastically romantic, especially in the late hours. Nearby is a replica of a Taíno village, with huts once inhabited by the natives. Along the lake stand numerous life-size sculptures. Treasure Lagoon and Guamá are exceptional tourist destinations. They seem designed for tranquility. You can quietly fish for trout, paddle a boat, and immerse yourself in the culture of the ancient natives.
A tour of the Zapata Peninsula will be even more memorable after visiting Playa Larga: one of the most beautiful and remarkable beaches on Cuba’s Caribbean coast. Here you will find everything for a peaceful vacation and for diving enthusiasts. The magnificent coral reef and rich marine fauna will delight both children and adults.
The Zapata Peninsula is a wonderful place to get acquainted with local culture, traditions, and to discover the flora and fauna of Cuba.
